WebP vs JPG: the real difference, in numbers
At the same visual quality, WebP files are typically 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPG. That figure comes from Google's WebP study on thousands of images, and it matches what you see with phone photos here.
JPG still wins on compatibility. Old Word versions, some printers and a few government portals reject WebP outright. If the file goes into a document someone else edits, send JPG.
WebP supports transparency and animation, JPG supports neither. A product shot on a transparent background has to be PNG or WebP, never JPG.
| Format | Typical size, same quality | Transparency |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | 100% | No |
| WebP | 66-75% | Yes |
| PNG | 300-600% (photos) | Yes |
